Daily moments that affect our mood at work

“Our findings indicate that employees who experience many good moments each day at work are more satisfied with their work and with their lives, tend to optimize their work resources and deal with the demands of their work, are less likely to disengage from work and they feel less stress, anxiety or depression,” says Rueff.
In other words, if we want to feel better, we need to pay more attention to our positive and negative experiences at work. Although positive daily experiences at work help us see the glass as half full and can have a direct positive impact on our mood and well-being at work, the findings of this research also reveal that bad daily moments at work produce the opposite effect: negative experiences reduce work commitment and job involvement and increase cases of depression, anxiety and stress.
“The pattern we have found in our studies shows that employees who had a lot of daily downturns were less likely to be satisfied with their job or to optimize their work resources and to cope with the demanding demands of the job,” the researchers say. What’s more, “employees with more episodes of daily bad times are more likely to disconnect from work and are more likely to present negative psychological symptoms, such as stress.”
The five good daily moments that help improve our mood at work
According to the researchers, if we want to improve our well-being and promote a positive mood work, we must look for these five daily good moments in our daily work relationships.
1. Pleasant, available and fulfilled interpersonal relationships
This first good moment refers to situations or behaviors that are pleasant for oneself or for others, in relation to our co-workers, managers/bosses or clients. For example, the simple gesture of being willing to give and receive help or a compliment from someone at work can substantially increase well-being and improve our mood.
2. Achievements, recognition and positive facts related to our work
It refers to engaging in interesting tasks, achieving work-related goals or objectives, and receiving various forms of recognition or reward for work done, for meeting objectives, and for doing a good job.
3. Humor and communication
This factor involves adopting humorous, pleasant, assertive, supportive attitudes that facilitate proximity to other employees. Having a good time together and laughing in the office is very beneficial and helps to create a positive mood to improve productivity.
4. Organizational improvements
It refers to the rules and policies of the organization that encourage small pleasures, such as daily breaks or social gatherings, and that accept requests from employees.
5. Time management and good times with clients
This factor seeks to increase the positive state of mind with efficient management of the time we dedicate to our daily tasks and with positive experiences that involve customers.
The five bad daily moments to take into account at work
If we feel low or unmotivated at work, the findings of this research indicate that part of the problem lies in the five bad times listed below. If we want to feel better at work and stay motivated, we must try to reduce (where possible) our exposure to these bad moments in our daily work relationships.
1. Conflicts and unpleasant interpersonal relationships
It refers to unpleasant behaviors or situations towards an employee by their co-workers, managers, bosses or clients. These episodes are characterized by communication difficulties, by aggressive communication, by the lack of empathy and by displays of bad humor.
2. Time management and bad times related to work
It refers to difficulties in managing daily tasks and carrying out routine activities that are uninteresting, unwanted and not at all motivating.
3. Threats to our effectiveness and performance
This factor refers to personal difficulties and defects that in some way pose a threat to our effectiveness and negatively influence our behavior, attitude and work performance.
4. Failures, interruptions and annoyances
It refers to events or work conditions that in some way disturb individual daily work. For example, when someone on our team makes a mistake, when we are interrupted in our work or have to work overtime due to an unexpected task, or when we are late for work.
5. Organizational or manager-related issues
These problems refer to organizational obstacles, such as absurd bureaucratic rules that interfere with our work, working too long without taking a break, or receiving orders on how we should do our work.
