The ‘Mini Hajj’, also known as the Umrah (or minor pilgrimage) possesses a very rich religious history dating back to the early times of Islam. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across the globe travel with their Umrah packages from London in order to fulfill their desire to visit the holy city of Makkah for religious purposes and engage themselves in acts of worship and seeking forgiveness from Allah Almighty. Here’s a brief religious history of the Umrah pilgrimage, also known as the Mini Hajj.
Pre-Islamic Era.
The tradition of performing the pilgrimage goes back to the pre-Islamic era as well. it used to be practiced by the pagan Arabs. However, the rituals of the Umrah performed during those times and the Umrah of today were entirely different.
Umrah during the times of the Holy Prophet (SAWW).
After the revelation of the Holy Quran to the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW), the period of enlightenment i.e., Islam started in the Arab. Therefore, the pilgrimage of Umrah underwent significant changes. Afterward, the Holy Prophet (SAWW) himself performed Umrah along with his (SAWW) companions to set an example for future generations to follow.
Our Holy Prophet (SAWW) performed a total of four Umrahs in his (SAWW) lifetime.
The First Pledge of Al-Aqaba.
During 621 CE, a group from Yathrib (known as Madinah today) came to the city of Makkah and pledged their allegiance to the Holy Prophet (SAWW). The pledge is known as the ‘First Pledge of Al-Aqaba’. This event was the official start of the relationship between the people of Madinah and the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW).
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was signed during 628 CE between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraysh of Makkah. As a result of this treaty, it was agreed upon between the two parties that Muslims would halt their journey for Makkah this year and return to Madinah. However, they can come the next year to perform the Umrah pilgrimage in Makkah and there would be no stopping for them from Quraysh.
Therefore, the event demonstrated the peaceful intentions as well as the determination of Muslims to offer Umrah rituals in the sunnah of the Holy Prophet (SAWW).
The Conquest of Makkah.
The conquest of Makkah was led by the Holy Prophet (SAW) in 630 CE, in which the Muslims conquered Makkah. Consequently, resulting in the removal of the idols from different places of Makkah and the officially establishing of the practices of Islam in the city. Therefore, also solidifying Makkah’s significance as the central location for Hajj and Umrah rituals.
The Farewell Pilgrimage.
During 632 CE, Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) performed his farewell pilgrimage (Hajj) where he (SAWW) also delivered his famous ‘farewell sermon’ at the Arafat region. Holy Prophet (SAWW) also emphasized the significance of Umrah; outlining the guidelines and rituals to follow till the end of times.
