How to Prepare for an SGOT Test: Tips and Guidelines?
What is SGOT?
If your doctor has ordered an LFT panel or a Liver Function Test, one of the parameters that will be measured by the test is SGOT. SGOT, also known as serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, is an important enzyme found in vital organs of the body, such as the liver, kidney, brain, and heart. SGOT is also referred to as Aspartate transaminase or Aspartate aminotransferase (AST or ASAT). SGOT is one of the two important liver enzymes, so an elevated SGOT reading often indicates liver damage.
Elevated SGOT levels are commonly associated with conditions like acute viral hepatitis A and B, Hepatitis C, liver fibrosis, and alcohol-induced liver disorders. Your doctor will typically diagnose these conditions based on a reading of SGOT in conjunction with SGPT or serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (also called alanine transferase or ALT) levels.
If SGOT is elevated without an SGPT elevation, it may indicate disease in some other part of the body. It’s important to note that SGOT levels can fluctuate in patients with Hepatitis C. Your doctor may recommend other tests to analyze the efficacy of treatments or the severity of the condition. However, among the two, an elevated SGPT is a more definitive indicator of liver damage
Preparing for the SGOT test
The SGOT test is typically performed as part of the LFT and is a simple blood test that requires no fasting or preparation. A trained technician or phlebotomist will draw blood from a vein in your forearm using a needle and collect it in a vial. Staying hydrated can help reduce pain and discomfort, and it’s a good idea to wear loose clothing to make the blood draw easier.
You may experience a prick or sting from the needle and some soreness or bruising at the site afterward, but the discomfort associated with the blood test is usually minimal. You will be asked to wait until the blood clots before you leave
It’s recommended that you avoid taking over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, supplements, and medications like acetaminophen before the test. If you take any regular medication, it’s important to inform your doctor or technician. Additionally, if you suffer from any blood clotting disorders, it’s important to inform the technician before the test.
Test results
Interpretation of SGOT test results should be done by a doctor or registered medical practitioner. It’s important to take all clinical symptoms into consideration before establishing a diagnosis, as a number of diseases or disorders can cause elevated SGOT levels. If your SGOT is elevated or indicates liver, kidney, or heart disease, your doctor may recommend additional tests. This is because many patients suffering from liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver failure or Hepatitis C may present with normal SGOT levels. Similarly, obesity and pancreatic disorders may also elevate SGOT levels.
Conclusion
If your doctor suspects liver impairment, they may recommend an LFT test which measures several factors, including bilirubin (total, coagulated, and uncoagulated), albumin, total protein, lactate, SGPT, SGOT, and GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase). When taken together, these factors provide clear indicators of liver health.
