Tyler is a city in and the county seat of Smith County, Texas, United States. Located in East Texas, it is on U.S. Highway 69 in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The population was 60,971 at the 2010 census and has grown 89% since 2000 according to a 2016 estimate by the United States Census Bureau.[3]

Tyler was founded as a railroad town named Malvern near the junction of two lines: one operated by the Houston and Texas Central Railway (now part of BNSF Railway) and another owned by another company called “Kansas City Southern”. Both railways maintained stations here until 1956 when they merged into one corporation known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe; this lasted until 1999 when its assets were split into three separate corporations: Union Pacific Corporation (which still operates trains through Tyler), BNSF Railway Company (also still operating trains through Tyler) and Kansas City Southern Railway Company.[4]
