Summary
The film recounts Count Dracula’s long-serving henchman Renfield’s yearning to quit his master and start over in modern-day New Orleans. It is a Universal Pictures relaunch of the Dracula brand, with a script by Ryan Ridley based on Robert Kirkman’s original concept. At the movie’s beginning, a black-and-white montage pays a great tribute to the original Bela Lugosi Dracula movies by showing how Renfield and Dracula first met. This is just one example of how the movie makes good use of the original parts of the Dracula story that have been added over the years. The movie treats everything about Dracula with almost respectful joy, and Nicholas Cage’s performance, which has enough of his own quirks, is the cherry on top.
Horror comedy is one of the hardest genres to write in because you have to switch between two genres on different ends of the spectrum and do so with equal respect for both.There are funny parts mixed in with a lot of blood and gore. Moments of fear aren’t rushed through with strange self-referential humor but are dealt with sincerely. You can enjoy parts of the movie, like when Renfield rips off the arms and legs of a bad guy and then uses them to fight off attackers.
Even though Quincy and Renfield’s attraction to each other establishes an interesting relationship, it has yet to explore fully. Her story arc with the Mafia gives the story a much-needed boost when it meets Renfield and Dracula, but it doesn’t go far enough to provide the story with what it needs.

Renfield may have been a much greater cinematic experience with a more concentrated plot, but it gives nothing short of a joyful, pleasant journey. Renfield is ultimately about getting the confidence to stand up for oneself. You can feel weak in front of someone to whom you have ceded your power, no matter how strong you are. And when you muster the confidence to seek assistance, you will meet the perfect people who will rekindle your optimism. The film always retains its central ideas while simultaneously maintaining a macrocosmic grasp on its genre and the expectations that come with it.
