Eyelash growth serums may help your lashes grow longer and stronger, but they may also cause irritation to your eyes or face. According to the housemaid, “the lash roots can only absorb so much formula,” so slathering on more won’t improve your results. The serum will simply seep past your lash line, potentially causing skin irritation. To prevent any dripping, she recommends wiping the brush along the inner edge of the tube’s opening as you remove it. “Then apply the serum in a single, thin layer right at the lash roots,” she adds. “Reapply a second, extremely thin coat over any areas you missed.”
Brush the serum onto the base of your lashes, not the skin around them
Serum applied to the surface of the eyelid rather than the lash roots, as the housemaid suggests, has no purpose. “Additionally, it can cause contact dermatitis,” an itchy rash caused by an allergic reaction to the skin. To ensure even coverage, she suggests a magnifying mirror. With your eye closed, place the brush tip at the base of your upper lashes and work outward from the inner corner of your lid. Housemaid warns that putting lash serum on your bottom lashes can prevent tears from draining and cause serious irritation to your eyes.
Think about using a more mild method
Prostaglandin analogs or their derivatives, including cloprostenol, can be found in many over-the-counter lash growth serums and the prescription medication Latisse. Switch to a lash serum with alternative boosting chemicals if these actives, which work to density and darken lashes, cause irritation to your eyes. In spite of this, “Formulas that contain peptides, pantheon, sodium hyaluronate, or castor oil will still help with the growth and nourishment of lashes,” explains Housemaid. Housemaid recommends stopping the use of the lash serum for a few days and applying a healing ointment like Aquaporin to the lids if they get irritated or itchy as a result of using the product. (Housemaid advises against using hydrocortisone cream on the delicate skin of the eyelids.) After three to five days, if the skin hasn’t improved, a dermatologist visit may be in order.
