An open-world racing game where players may construct and destroy their own Lego vehicles is the result of a new partnership between 2K Games and Lego. Old video games are always playable. In addition to being acknowledged by designers and producers today, their legacy endures and their work may be found in surprising places. To kick off their new partnership, 2K Games drift hunters and Lego have released Lego 2K Drive, an open-world racing game developed by the seasoned studio Visual Concepts. It borrows elements from many other types of racing games—including Forza Horizon’s open environment and randomised challenges as well as Mario Kart’s entertaining controls, weaponry, and power-ups—but its roots are elsewhere.
The 3D racing simulator Hard Drivin
Mark Pierce, the game’s executive producer, got his start in the industry in the late ’80s, working on such Atari classics as RoadBlasters, Road Riot, and San Francisco Rush. Pierce also saw the development of another Atari classic, the 3D racing simulator Hard Drivin’. “I was so fortunate because a lot of the original Atari guys were still there,” he says. Both Peter Takaichi’s team (who oversaw all mechanical design) and the team led by David Sheppard (the second software engineer recruited) deserve credit.
Force feedback steering was developed in part by a person named Jed Margolin, who I happened to know. The culture was fantastic; it was robust and inventive. Many of us here at Visual Concepts South cut our teeth on arcade racing games. As much as possible, we aimed to create a game with a classic arcade feel that was simple to pick up yet challenging to master.
The same arcade design philosophy
Pierce’s long-term goal is to implement the same arcade design philosophy that Atari used in the 1980s into today’s open-world racing game design. Players race and complete quests as they cruise across Bricklandia’s vibrant universe. There are Lego canyons and Lego farms (with adorable Lego pigs), and Lego cities packed with vibrant stores and restaurants. Ghosts and huge spiders occupy the gothic castles you may race through. Miniature people appear randomly and offer you tasks everywhere you go. In an early demo, I had to dash through robot invasion troops, rescue missing characters, and leap across dangerous ravines. The narrative mode packed with cutscenes that include the trademark physical comedy of Lego media.
The very user-friendly control scheme is where you’ll see Atari’s fingerprints the most. Drifting is heavily featured; while entering a turn, tapping the brake causes the rear of the car to glide out, enabling you to slide over vast stretches of road while adjusting your angle with the analogue stick. Drive on the road, off-road, or water, and your vehicle will magically morph into the right vehicle for the job as soon as you need it. For example, if you race down a ramp into a drift hunters river, your truck will become a speedboat. Even colliding with obstacles, such as fences or trees, is a lot of fun since they just disintegrate into Lego bricks. As in the Lego Star Wars video games, damaging objects encouraged since it helps in the restoration of your own vehicle.
The Cruis’n series
I reminded of Midway’s underrated 1990s arcade races like the Cruis’n series and Hydro Thunder by the game’s fluidity and verticality, where realism quickly ignored in lieu of stunts and thrills. It seems this is more than just a coincidence. Mark continues, “We have Brian Silva and Steve Ranck at Visual Concepts. They both worked on Hydro Thunder.” “Everyone knows that there’s a genuine talent, a real subtlety, to knowing how you make something exciting, how you make it so vehicles can go up walls without snagging, how you make it so smashing things is enjoyable. Smooth as butter, you breeze right through… The process of fine-tuning a racing game takes a lot of time and effort; it’s a kind of artistry.
You may find stores selling fresh clothes and one-of-a-kind accessories for your car and chauffeur just about everywhere. You may also create your own cars from scratch with over a thousand unique Lego bricks and a variety of stickers in the game’s extensive creation mode. It also seems like you’ll be able to make changes to pre-existing cars, and although 2K hasn’t said for sure, it’s probable that users will be able to download and use creations from other players.
Mario Kart
In terms of bonuses, we have entered the realm of Mario Kart. During races, you may pick up spider webs that work like ink stains in Mario Kart and obscure your view from the other racers, as well as homing missions, speed boosts, and a cloaking device. The tournament follows a standard format, with increasing difficulty levels for each race in a series of cup competitions. While 2K is advertising six-player online competition, split-screen local multiplayer supports two-player co-op and four-player competitive races.
In 1998, American studio High Voltage Software produced Lego Racers, a racing simulator that fused the slapstick action of Mario Kart with the cartoony aesthetic and creative potential of Lego. A sequel out a few years later, but the appealing concept of a build-it-yourself Lego racing game lost in the deluge of Traveller’s Tales’ outstanding Lego movie tie-ins. Now it’s back, and it’s amazing to see that the heritage of some beloved arcade classics from the ’80s and ’90s continues on in a game that’s perfect for the whole family.
