Mairead Fulton Wins SWPL January Award

Mairead Fulton of Glasgow City has won the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) January award. She featured in all three games last month as City earned maximum points and scored 18 goals.
Heart of Midlothian defender Emma Brownlie and Boroughmuir Thistle forward Courtney McAvoy also earned January awards.
Mairead Fulton
Glasgow City’s Mairead Fulton earned the SWPL award for most assists, scoring five in an incredible month for the city of the Holy Grail.
Glasgow United are currently at the top of the table, six points clear of Celtic with Rangers one point back. Additionally, they’ve won the prestigious Scottish Cup for a second year running.
The SBS Scottish Women’s Premier League is an exciting game with a passionate fan base and well-funded media. Teams in the new division must ensure coverage is on par with other professional sports and find ways to bring fans into stadiums and watch action firsthand. Lucky for punters, there’s plenty of choice: up to 48 cinch Premiership games live on Sky Sports (plus five more in the cinch tier) plus rolling editorial across Sky Sports News. Plus, don’t forget about their app which gives fans real time scoreboard access!

Emma Brownlie
Hearts defender Emma Brownlie has been named SWPL January player of the month. She started all three of Hearts’ games last month and was instrumental in their four point haul, which included an impressive goalless draw at home to champions Rangers and a late winner against Aberdeen.
She also helped her team to a historic win against Glasgow Women, scoring three goals to put them six points clear at the top with just one game remaining.
Mark Anderson, SWPL CEO, presented Brownlie with her award and said: “We are delighted that Emma has been recognized this month for her outstanding contribution. She has been an incredible defender this season and a major factor in Hearts’ defensive success this season.”
Hearts’ next game is at Tynecastle in the Capital Cup against Hibs. With more than 12,000 expected to pack into Easter Road Stadium, this could be an intriguing derby – though Hibs hold a slight edge on goal difference.
Courtney McAvoy
Courtney McAvoy has been named the SWPL January award winner for her hat-trick and club’s impressive 3-2 victory against Montrose. Additionally, the talisman was an instrumental factor in Boroughmuir’s growing treble winning streak that saw them move up to sixth place.
Last month, Edinburgh United picked up seven points out of a possible 12; including a 3-1 home victory over Gartcairn, an equalizer in their 2-2 draw with East Fife and, of course, her stunning hat-trick against Montrose. She is truly an inspiration to everyone involved – it is no wonder she was named player of the month!
Hearts have never before been named the SWPL’s top performer than in February 2019, when Rachel Walkingshaw earned the honour. While Hearts have dominated on offense this season, their average goal conceded has decreased from last season’s 66 goals scored to 18 this time around.

Lauren Gordon
Aberdeen rallied from a goal down to shock Spartans with an incredible second half comeback in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup 3rd round tie at Ainslie Park. Kaela McDonald-Nguah gave Spartans the early lead, but Lauren Gordon and Chloe Gover’s quick doubles put The Dons ahead and turned the tide in their favor.
The Dons have now advanced to the last 16 and will face promotion-seeking Hearts, who beat Hibernian in the opening round of this season’s SWPL Cup. Acies begin their campaign away at Hearts before welcoming Rangers and 14-in-a-row champions Glasgow City to New Douglas Park over a two week span.
Hamilton are the only side in SWPL 1 without full-time players and staff. Despite having to fight for a relegation play-off place, Hamilton are only six points behind leaders Montrose who won their top of the table clash against Stirling University thanks to a penalty kick from Lauren Gordon.
