Making Sense of Auto Enrolment Pension in Ireland

There’s a lot of talk in the media about pension reform, and it can be quite confusing. In this article, we explain what Auto Enrolment is and how it affects your business.
What is Auto Enrolment Pension?
Auto Enrolment Pension is a new law that came into force in 2012. It requires employers to enrol their employees into a pension scheme, unless the employee chooses to opt out. The employee doesn’t have to do anything and the employer must make contributions on behalf of the employee.
The employer must pay these contributions on time, or face penalties for failing to comply with this new legislation!
When does my business need to enrol for Auto Enrolment Pension?
The date your business needs to enrol for Auto Enrolment Pension is 1st January 2023. The date your business needs to start paying contributions is 1st April 2023.
If you are an employer with fewer than 50 staff, the earliest date that you can start making payments into a default scheme is 1st October 2023 (although this will not apply if you have been granted an exemption).
How much is the minimum contribution I need to make?
The minimum contribution depends on your business size. The percentage of salary that you are required to contribute, and therefore the minimum amount that you must pay into your employee’s pension scheme is calculated by multiplying the number of employees by 8%.
So, if you have 1 employee then the minimum contribution would be €800 per year (8% multiplied by 1). If you have 10 employees then it would be €8,000 per year (8% multiplied by 10).
What happens if I don’t comply with the law and do nothing about it?
The law is there to protect you, and it’s important that you comply with it. If you don’t comply with the law and do nothing about it, there are penalties for not doing so. You could face a fine of up to €5,000 if convicted in court of an offence under pensions legislation.
The importance of getting advice from a professional cannot be overstated; they will be able to help you understand how much money needs to be put aside each year into your pension pot in order for it grow into a sustainable retirement income stream when needed later down the road (you can find out more about this here).
How Can I Set Up My Retirement Plan?
If you are an employer, there are three ways to set up a pension plan:
- Set up the plan yourself. This can be done by any employer and requires little more than registering with Revenue and completing some paperwork. It’s also known as an “unfunded” or “self-administered” pension plan.
- Use a pension provider to run your scheme on your behalf (for example, Financial Institutions or Insurance Companies). This type of arrangement is called an “insured” or “third party” arrangement because it involves insurance companies providing services to trustees who administer them in accordance with law and regulations set out by The Pensions Board Ireland (formerly known as The Pension Board), which oversees all such arrangements made under Section 6(1)(b) of the Occupational Pensions Act 1990). These types of schemes are sometimes referred to as group personal pensions (GPPs) because they provide benefits based on contributions made by employees rather than employers alone; however, GPPs offered via auto enrolment must comply with specific rules regarding minimum contribution rates for both members and employers that differ from those applying under other types of GPPs offered via voluntary means such as salary sacrifice arrangements or DC schemes funded solely through employee contributions
You can choose to set up your own retirement plan.
You can choose to set up your own retirement plan.

Conclusion
If you’re a small business owner in Ireland Pension and you have employees, it’s important to know about Auto Enrolment Pension. The law requires all businesses with more than one employee to enrol for this scheme by January 2023. However, if you don’t comply with this law then there are serious consequences such as fines or even jail time!
