Top 5 Utopian Movies of All Time

Listen to this article

Utopia is a concept that has been used in many literary works and film projects. It aims to present a perfect society that is free of all hardships and limitations. However, the utopian vision often ends up being a little twisted. Here are some of the most notable Utopian movies 123 that have been made.

1. The Matrix (1999)

The Wachowskis’ 1999 science fiction thriller changed the game for action movies 123 and became an iconic cultural moment. Bullet time, stylised action and trench coats forever changed the way sci-fi films were made.

The Matrix is a dystopian future where machines decimated the human race and enslaved the remaining humans in a simulated world. Its main protagonist Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a computer programmer who decides to break free from the Matrix and discovers that reality isn’t what he thinks it is.

It’s a story about the power of a mind over matter and how that affects every single decision we make in life. But it’s also a film about freedom and how knowledge can help us become better people. That’s what makes The Matrix a timeless classic. It’s still relevant, and it continues to open new philosophical doors for viewers even as it expands their conception of what action cinema can do.

2. Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca (1997) is a cautionary sci-fi thriller that looks at how the world would be if genetic engineering became the norm. In this near future, geneticists use reproductive technology to select specific genes in embryos to make healthy and attractive children.

This film examines a dystopia where genetic discrimination is legal and perfection rules. The result is a society where the “in-valids” are relegated to menial jobs and the genetic elite take their place of privilege in society.

Andrew Niccol’s biopunk future meets tech-noir in this thoughtful piece of science fiction. The film raises plenty of questions and does an excellent job of presenting them in a compelling way. However, despite its impressively fine-tuned premise and visually stunning aesthetics, the film is not as engaging as it could have been.

3. In Time (2011)

In Time (2011) tells the story of a dystopia in which people stop ageing at age 25 and a green clock on their wrist counts down the remaining years they have to live. The rich are immortal, while the poor struggle with a life of rushing to the next day.

The premise is interesting, though the film can’t decide whether to focus on it or not. It’s a little confusing, but it has some pretty good action scenes and an excellent cast.

But the film’s message is muddled and inconsistent, and its characters are too daft to really be believable. It’s a shame, because writer-director Andrew Niccol has previously given us thought-provoking films like Gattaca and The Truman Show.

4. Minority Reports (1995)

Minority Reports (1995) is a sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise. It is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, the author of such books as Blade Runner and Total Recall.

In 2054, crime was virtually eliminated in Washington DC thanks to a law-enforcing squad called “Precrime”. The elite police force uses three gifted humans (called “Precogs”) with special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand.

But, the Precogs occasionally disagree with one another. These are referred to as “minority reports.” Anderton is the subject of a minority report when the Precogs predict that he will commit a murder in the near future. He disagrees with their assessment and sets out to clear his name.

5. Metropolis (1927)

The 1927 movie Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. Its stunning visuals and themes are still relevant in the modern world. The film explores the theme of the Industrial Revolution and how it changed the working man’s role. Previously, a person would have their own identity and pride in their trade or profession.

However, after the rise of technology and large manufacturing corporations, a person was no longer able to have an identity in their job. Instead, they became drone-like figures that robotically marched in a line.

The movie also examines a society that divides itself into upper and lower classes. The workers live underground below the city’s machinery, and the upper class lives above ground.
