The Good and Not-So-Good History of Brazilian Coffee

Brazil as a land was not even known to anyone, until the arrival of the first batch of Portuguese settlers. After that, Pedro Cabral took the helm to continue his colonial dominance in the 1500s.

But coming to coffee production, First of all, it is imperative to understand that coffee was imported to Brazil. Francisco De Melo Palheta, a Portuguese diplomat, was the first man to plant a coffee bush in Para, Brazil in 1727. Long story short, Palheta was looking to capitalize on the hot and humid conditions of Brazil, which was perfect for coffee plantations. However, he did not have it easy. During the French colonization of Guiana, coffee was valued as big as gold. Palheta went to obtain these seeds from the governor but was later turned down. Here, the story gets edgy: Palheta had a secret relationship with the governor’s wife, and she gave him a mouthful of seeds in a flower bouquet. And that’s how Brazil’s dominion in the coffee world began.

By 1840, coffee production in Brazil had peaked. Para wasn’t the only town producing coffee, Rio de Janeiro and Santos also joined the ranks and began mass-productions. Since then, the country has seen a rapid spike in its coffee importation. Countries are now setting up new centers to take advantage of this trade and import Rio Minas Coffee.

Rich Coffee Growing Regions in Brazil

While Brazil is blessed with vast stretches of fertile lands, that doesn’t mean they are suitable for coffee plantations. One of the reasons why this happens is because of altitude. Since the land mass is at different altitudes, the growth of the berries may be affected. Still, Brazil’s large distribution of coffee plantations is as big as Belgium’s entire land area.

There are fourteen major coffee-producing regions spread across the country. Most of these regions produce Arabica coffee. Some of these regions include Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Cerrado, Mogiana, Parana, Rio Minas, and Bahia. Among these regions, Sao Paulo, Bahia, and Parana are the most popular Arabica coffee hotspots. Especially, Rio Minas unroasted beans are famous for their many health benefits.

We will look into a few of these major regions producing the best coffee in Brazil.

  • Cerrado de Minas – The Cerrado is a vast savanna in eastern Brazil. It holds a special status known as the ‘Cerrado Mineiro,’ because of its famed coffee production. Cerrado de Minas mainly produces Mundo Novo and Catuai coffee beans, which have a caramel-esque aroma and come with a chocolaty finish. These beans are neutral in sweetness and contain a certain percentage of citrus acid.
  • Matas de Minas – Similar to Cerrado, this region produces Mundo Novo and green and yellow Catuai coffee beans. Matas de Minas is located in the southern part of Brazil. The features of these beans include balanced acidity and a medium body. These beans often taste like a combination of both caramel and chocolate.
  • Chapada de Minas – The Chapada de Minas is famous for its natural coffee production. Because of the uneven distribution of valleys, it has the advantage of altitude which is a crucial factor in growing coffee. The coffee produced in this region is the same as the above two, Mundo Novo and Catuai. They are high in acidity and have neutral sweetness.

Many of you are already familiar with the majestic benefits of Rio Minas unroasted beans. And it wouldn’t come as a surprise if you have consumed them at some point for your own benefit. These coffee beans have indeed lived up to the reputation that it has garnered all this while.

The Biggest Importers of Brazilian Coffee

Being the largest coffee producer in the world, the Brazilian market bumbles with importers from different nations. Different countries come with different needs. Some countries prefer the best quality coffee beans from Cerrado or Bahia, while others strictly adhere to a specific kind, which can be as simple as to import Rio Minas coffee. Among the many top importers United States, Japan, and Germany are the top consumers of Brazilian coffee.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know why Brazil is considered the king of the coffee world, you will definitely give it a go. To actually savor its essence rather than studying or learning facts. There are a number of varieties to select from, from the Mundo Novo and colorful Catuai to the famed Rio Minas unroasted beans. And with improved courier facilities, it is easy to import Rio Minas Coffee directly to your home.
