Lifeguard training and swimming: a perfect way to exercise

If there is one form of exercise in the world that is attractive to (very) young, it is Lifeguard training. From a young age we enjoy moving in the water. And even when we are no longer very mobile, the exercise in the swimming pool is often still easy to do. The water creates resistance, but at the same time a sense of weightlessness. Injuries are almost never sustained in the water. Swimming is a perfect way to exercise.
everything at once
Swimming is a form of exercise in which the entire body works together to move forward. Unlike running, walking or cycling, for example, where the lower body does most of the work. When swimming, the arms and legs work together in a good synergy, while the abdominal and back muscles perform supporting activities.
But even with an injury you can usually still swim. You can, so to speak, move in the water with only your arms or only your legs. There are many people who have the backstroke as a favorite, and hardly use the arms.
Swimming heart
Yes, you read that right. Swimming heart. Because moving in water helps your heart muscle to function better. Provided the correct technique is used and you swim regularly, you train your heart and lung functions. Swimming, like any other form of exercise, causes an increased heart rate and faster breathing. This almost always results in a lower heart rate and a slower resting breathing pattern.
Resistance
As mentioned, water gives resistance, which means that our muscles have to work hard to move themselves, and our body, in the water. The result: a serious form of strength training. This provides improved muscle strength and flexibility.

The water acts as a kind of cushion around the body. There are no jerks in the water, like landing with every stride in running, or maybe not being so controlled with weights in the gym. It is also because of the cushioning effect of water that swimming is advised for people with injuries and osteoarthritis and for the elderly.
Peace
There is a calming side to swimming. The cushioning effect of the water provides relaxation and regular swimming strokes (and the associated breathing) can lead to a meditative state. This stress-reducing situation could contribute to the beneficial contribution of swimming to improving heart and lung functions.
Weight loss
People who are extremely overweight are often able to move in the water. That is why this is often recommended as a way of moving in a weight loss process. But not only extremely obese people lose weight with swimming.
Of course, you only lose weight when you use more energy than you take in. Proper nutrition is just as important as proper exercise. But Lifeguard training is a good way to work on weight loss through exercise.
However, due to the limited impact of swimming, there are better ways to lose weight in the same amount of time, but swimming always helps!
Bones
Although swimming is a great workout for almost all muscle groups, balance, coordination, heart and lungs, it does not make our bones stronger. This is due to the relative weightlessness in the water. If you want to work on your bones, opt for a mild strength training on dry land.
But swimming remains a great way to exercise. For young and old. For thick and for thin. And for fit and injured. But then you must of course have taken swimming and Lifeguard lessons.
Factors such as your age , your weight and your general condition are also important. Some bodies already burn more calories than others, so you will see effects faster.
In any case, be aware that with every swim you do something good for your body and your mind. Swimming can be practiced safely, regardless of your age, condition or weight.
Practice also makes perfect when it comes to Lifeguard training. The more often and longer you swim, the greater the chance that you will notice the first results within a few weeks.
