Most people have heard of the story of the Dutch inventor, Karel van der Weijde, who invented a machine that would grind grain and crush meat in one. He also invented the first steam engine, but he died before he could get it fully developed.
His son took over and eventually made a machine that worked very well. He gave the name “Karelian” to his machine because he had lived in what is now Dutch Finland. The next year, in the early nineteenth century, another machine was built, which was called “Dutch”. It became the first machine that could grind grain and crush meat at the same time.
This is how the word “Dutch” came to be. In restaurants, each person would pay for their meal in a Dutch fashion. The phrase, “to Dutch” means to share or to do business together. A Dutch date is a date that people have to split the cost of. This phrase became popular during the 1950s.
